A ‘bioclimatic pergola’ is a term used in the UK to describe a very innovative aluminium structure which uses multiple, motorised, aluminum blades in the roof canopy section. It is also often referred to as louvered roof system.

The Samson Bioclimatic Pergola System has been designed primarily for larger areas, it has an aluminium framework which incorporates a rainwater guttering and drainage system taking the water off the roof and down one or all of the supporting legs, avoiding splashing and maintaining the driest area possible under the pergola. In the sunshine of course you can open and rotate the blades and let in a little, or a lot of sunshine and heat.

The best systems have a fully retractable roof, when the blades tilt, slide and line up to a stack at one end, revealing around 80% of the full roof size to the sky and open elements. The Samson Bioclimatic Pergola System / Louvered Roof System is ideal to protect from sun and rain, but also with additional side infills you are protected from the wind too. The wind is the biggest cooling element in our ever-erratic British weather and preventing it when sitting outside extends the time you have outside so much. Control of the electric blades on the roof is via a simple remote handset, or more commonly now with an app on your smartphone or tablet, where you take control of the roof blades, lighting and any other side options which are also electrically operated.

This sort of smart control gives you the ability to make preset ‘scenarios’ and have the outdoor room control its own climate if required with the combination of additional weather sensors… Sensors to detect wind, rain and sunlight as well as more advanced temperature control sensors too.

All our bioclimatic louvre roof pergolas are made to measure, although we do offer some standard size models too. From the size, the colour, the height, the lighting and the infills on the sides we can specify it all from the ground up to perfectly suit your home or garden.

Wall mounted, or standalone the choice is yours. Wall mounted systems can create an outdoor space which effortlessly embraces the outdoors from your existing property where a standalone system can create a space to specifically go to, away from your home.

Often a property will have restrictions on the ability to fix structures to, whether it be a height mismatch or maybe unsuitable wall strength or misaligned wall faces. Either way a standalone structure will self-support from the ground and mean there is no attachment to an existing building even if you decide to marry the space in-between with protective cladding or similar.

So often customers will present a space outdoors for us to assess for a canopy cover, which is neither square or rectangular. We can go around corners and fill unsquared areas with bespoke blade arrangements.

TECHNICAL ABILITY

For peace of mind and maximum use is imperative the rainwater drainage is correct for a bioclimatic pergola, which is calculated on its size. We know the downpipe size and rain guttering size is a critical consideration to deal with most types of rainfall.

These ‘outdoor room’ systems can never be 100% watertight and no one guarantees that, but they do need to cope with most conditions well.

The UK is challenging because of large temperature changes and more recently, heavy rain and wind coming from nowhere.

The design of the blades are also a big consideration and the ability to rotate the blades a full 175 degrees on many of our systems gives a lot of control over air flow inside and the cooling and heating potential.

Size of blades, size of rain channels and size of drainage pipes are all critical features, along with the strength and integrity of the overall framework to deal with the highest wind speeds and worst storms when challenged.

Simply bolting a pergola like this to your patio would lead to a problem and the careful calculation of concrete ground support and footplate connections are all very critically calculated on our commercial and domestic models.
